Types Of Metal Joining Process
The joining of elements into a single body is known as fabrication. The process include cutting, bending, assembling. All the major productions include the fabrication process. Metal joining process are broadly classified into
Welding, soldering, brazing - The method of metal joining by heating of metal or filler metal above the melting point.
Adhesive bonding - Metal elements are joined by using synthetic glues. Popular in joining of dissimilar metal.
Factors affecting the choice of fabrication
- The material being joined - similar or dissimilar, aluminum, iron, copper, etc.
- Type of assembly- Temporary or permanent.
- Economy.
- Service condition - load, temperature, etc.
Generally the metal joining process means the welding process. According to the composition of the joint, they are classified into
Autogeneous - Metal joining process without using filler metal. Eg, Resistance welding.
Homogeneous - A similar material to parent metal used as filler material. Eg, Arc welding gas welding.
Heterogeneous - This method used for joining metals they are insoluble in each other. A filler material other than parent material is used. Eg, Soldering, Brazing.
